Very early in my financial career I happened across a book by The Brookings Institution called A Voluntary Tax? It changed the direction of my career. This book reviewed studies of wealthy families in an effort to try and understand how the use of sophisticated estate planning can help these families avoid the estate tax in an era of relatively high estate tax rates. The conclusion was there are many tools available that account for eliminating or at least reducing the amount of estate tax paid. However, the true advantage to these families was the use of a special breed of legal and financial advisors who not only knew about the tools to be used, but more importantly had the ability to time, combine and sequence them to implement the tax reduction strategies.
As my career evolved, I wondered why the same result could not be accomplished relative to income tax at the personal level and corporate level as well. As I worked on this goal of reducing or eliminating income tax in retirement planning, I developed the proprietary TCS Process (Timing, Combining and Sequencing). The reason I became more passionate about this goal was our clients' painful experience regarding their taxes. As I learned more and developed my process, it was clear they needed relief from the taxes they were paying.
